The Salsa and Bachata Society at the University of St Andrews is all about fun, fitness, and love for dancing! For over 20 years, we've been teaching people how to shimmy and shake their bodies and we are still having a great time doing so. Previously EIDSOC, the Ethnic and Interpretive Dance Society, and then ShimmySoc, we've now become the Salsa and Bachata Dancing Society! We are a friendly group that welcomes anyone and aims to show people that unconventional dance style are just as exciting and enjoyable as any other dance. Not to mention they are a great way to get more fit!
Our dances are all about having fun, learning new ways to move, and feeling good about yourself! Come join us for any of our Salsa or Bachata classes! While Salsa and Bachata originated from around the same region, Cuba and the Dominican Republic respectively, the biggest difference between the two styles are their overall presentation. Salsa is very fast pace and has very quick turns, whereas Bachata is danced at a much slower pace and has a much more intimate feel and presentation.
